High School EMS Educators

Adult EMS Ed is one thing - teaching it to today's youth is another

EMTs and Paramedics are, for the most part, pretty childish. Imagine high school students going into EMS.

This looks great. I missed seeing that you posted this. Was there a story on how this came about? We will have to talk about coming over and trying it out. I was lucky to be able to borrow an ambulance two weeks ago but a Sim Man would be wonderful.

Start of the year

I have been meaning to start back on this topic but it is almost Thanksgiving already and it might be old.  I had previously talked about getting students to break through their resistance to touching each other.  I was going to revisit that at the beginning of this year, because a large part of the solution is how you set up the culture in your class.  As the school year started, how did you set up that culture?  What did you do to make it alright to have them touch each other?  Are they still…See More

Still got to get some more things done to make it complete. Waiting on the graphics guy to come in, and the Gurney and Sim Man to show up.

OJT

On the Job Training for EMS is usually a dangerous idea--people's health, and possibly life, could be on the line. The OEC programs in MN are contracted to provide field medics for a HUGE soccer tournament (actually 2 tournaments) that lasts 8 days. The USA Cup had up to 66 games going at the same time. We have 7 medical carts covering 7 zones. The golf carts have been modified to carry a backboard and equipment. We staff the carts in order of certification.…See More

How to Get Hands-On in EMT Class

In my recent interview on the EMS EduCast Podcast, I was asked about the issue of getting students to do the hands-on skills. This is always a problem in EMT classes where you have trouble getting the students to actually touch each other to take a pulse, splint an arm, or do a head-to-toe assessment. My answer, off the top of my head, was that it isn't that much of an issue because we create a culture in our classroom that students will be…See More

MN OEC Programs outlined in EMSEduCast Podcast

Episode 65: This episode of the EMSEduCast guest speaker is Paul Wilson, a high school social studies teacher and EMT since 2001. Paul was involved in a high school program that teaches junior and senior high school students emergency care skills, starting with CPR and ending with EMT. The one year program called Opportunities in Emergency Care meets 2 hours a day for an entire school year, so approximately 275 hours of emergency care training. This is a…See More

Please post to Blog

This network is created to help youth/high school EMS educators collaborate. It is to help collect what work as well as what doesn't work when it comes to teaching EMS to the younger set. It is a place to share ideas, successes, and failures. I hope established programs can get new ideas and new programs can find resources and guidance on how to create or structure their program.

Please feel free to post a little about your program (or your hopes for a program) in the forum (now below). Beyond that, if you have other comments or stories from your classes in the blog area further below.
